Our History

Kennel Maids was founded in 2000 by Wendy Senior.

" I have worked professionally within the animal care industry over  the past 34 years: Having ridden from an early age I spent my teenage years working with County Show ponies, then latterly as a groom on the British show jumping circuit.

I then went on to work in a renowned boarding kennels in Yorkshire where I was responsible for training students from Park Lane Animal Care College.

Working along side Sid Jenkins, ex RSPCA Regional Inspector; teaching students all aspects of animal care, both psychological and physical, First Aid, welfare, custody and control.  We also provided kennelling for HMP Wakefield prison dogs who came to us for their rest periods. These dogs needed specialist handling and understanding. This experience provided a vital learning tool into the deeper understanding of canine behaviour."

"Kennel Maids was established in 2000 predominately as a dog walking / pet sitting / cat care service ; to cater for owners who were out at work all day/out for the day/elderly/on holiday or just busy."

"As time went by, I was asked to provide Home Boarding for my clients dogs not suitable for traditional boarding; usually due to age, ill health , special needs or simply not able to cope due to stress or separation anxiety. "

"As the client list has grown, I have been joined by a small but dedicated team of Professional pet carers. My team are hand picked for their Knowledge, Integrity, Commitment, Compassion and Genuine Affinity with dogs. We are well known in  the local area and have a proven track record within our industry.

We are continually recommended by our vets of which some use our services for their own dogs.

Our staffing ratio averages 1 carer to 4  dogs

Therefore, you can be assured of the very best in Professional care."

licensing - in the begining  …...

As the demand for my Home Boarding grew, I approached the council on several occasions, to request that I be licensed, as is the requirement for kennel boarding establishments.

As you can see from the documentation on the left, in 2008 I was told, again,  there was no such licensing available.

I was very concerned as I had heard a few 'shady!' stories regarding this topic!

I have always run my business to far exceed any suggested model conditions, but was concerned that it should be treated as serious as Kenneling.

Finally, in 2010 South Lakeland District Council devised a Home Boarding License.

This was the first step to taking the industry seriously and to be fair to other boarding establishments that were required (quite rightly!) by law to be licenced.

I am proud to have been instrumental in this and as legislation is changing again, for the better , this is good news.
